Textbook isn't needed. The only grades in the class are the midterm and the final which are basically the same questions as the practice exam posted, so if you use google for those, the textbook isn't needed; although, the textbook is actually really good, so you might want to just buy it for life.

Fall 2010

I did a few readings, but I don't feel like they were necessary, and sometimes they didn't even talk about the same stuff that was covered in lecture. Also the book is expensive. Just don't bother with buying it or even renting it. All the important material is covered in lecture and recitation and pltl. They don't test over any stuff that is only found in the book

While reading the book certainly won't hurt you, 99.999% of the material on the tests can be learned from studying the lecture slides and the assigned tables. Study those and you're golden. If I could do it over again I wouldn't have gotten the textbook.

If you have Sundaramoorthi do not bother to buy the textbook. You can learn the material easily from his slides. I learned that instead of buying the book to do extra practice problems, just go to the website interactmath.com and find the course textbook. You can do the course's practice problems online interactively, and it's also free. I believe all textbooks published by Pearson are on this website, so you can use it for other courses too. (like Calculus and Calc II)

Macdonald

If you take MEC 290 with Macdonald, then you do not need to purchase the textbook. He teaches the class his own way and literally did not reference the textbook even one time during the semester. He has a brilliant way of teaching it himself without the aid of a textbook. Save yourself the money.

I did not have Bechara, but I believe the book was helpful in her class.

The book is a must. The material is tough enough that you need to go through the book to be able to understand everything, plus you need all the hw problems. The SI version is the same chapter material, except some of the homework problems are just completely different, so for all the assignments you need to at least have access to the normal version to be sure that you do the right problems.

Outside of the hw problems, I didn't use the book too much, as going to lectures was enough to know the material.
The book is good to have. You need it for the hw problems, and for test review it's very helpful to go through the book itself. I had the SI version and it was exactly the same, problems and all, so if you can find that and save some cash do so. Sharing a book with a friend would also work.
